Gold-Plated Silver

Gold-plated, here, means a warm gold surface worked over solid 925 sterling. The distinction is worth spelling out, because much of the gold-coloured jewellery sold cheaply in India is brass or so-called German silver, where the colour is the whole of it and nothing of value sits beneath. These pieces are sterling first. Should the plating ever thin, what is left in your hand is still silver.

That is the honest part: plating is a surface, and surfaces wear. How quickly has more to do with skin, climate and handling than with price. Perfume, hair spray and hand lotion do more harm than years of ordinary wear, so dress first and put the jewellery on last. Wipe with a soft dry cloth, store pieces apart rather than loose together in a bag, and keep silver dip and polishing cloths well away, since both are made to abrade tarnish and on a plated piece they abrade the gold instead.
